FAQs

  • Hane means house, location, venue in Turkish (and Persian), so jazzhane is the the jazz house.
The origin of the word dates back to persian χāne خانه and middle persian χānag.

  • jazzhane is a cultural association promoting music that has been created, rediscovered, and reinterpreted along the silk road.

Doing so, we strongly believe in creating spaces for people to feel they belong: yes, that means, humming to songs you we know from our childhood, ecstatically dancing to music from home, looking into the eyes of «strangers» and silently acknowledging mutual feelings of joy.

  • jazzhane is a cultural association based in Zurich. We are a group of volunteers with full-time day-jobs and a great passion for music.

Our concerts are usually co-produced with our venue-partners.

  • No, jazzhane is a cultural association with a focus on music that has been created, rediscoved, and reinterpreted along the silk road. Anatolian music is just one region along the migration and blending of music that has been going on for centuries.

  • We place great value on the artistic curation of our cultural program. The decisions for our productions, collaborations, and shows are made on artistic merits in collaboration with our co-producers (venues) and musicians (Swiss and international). Trying our best to represent a diverse (gender, ethnicity, culture, opinion, etc.) group of artists on stage, we understand this is not always possible due to structural limitations.

The regions we and some of our artists (partly) come from are home to several conflicts and turbulences which are a source of suffering for many of us and we will always invite those, who contribute to a peaceful world.

We will continue our policy in the future because we strongly believe that music can tell our stories of suffering, love, happiness, migration, and oppression beyond nation-based borders. This is at the very core of jazzhane and we are proud to have created spaces for members of our community to feel they belong.

We collaborate exclusively with artists and partners who uphold the highest standards of respect and inclusivity, and who do not engage in any form of discriminatory behavior (online and offline) or hate speech. We ask our partners to be aware of their role and notoriety, which brings with it a tremendous responsibility. We do our research as best as we can, given the limits (time, resources, etc.) we have, and discuss each artist together with our co-producers.

  • We provide the ticket links for each concert on the specific concert page. You will be taken to our partners’ pages to buy tickets in advance. Usually, you can also buy tickets at the box office.

Please note that we do not keep a quota on box office tickets. We advise you to always buy your tickets in advance to guarantee your spot at our concerts.

  • Usually your concert tickets are also valid for the afterparties. You will not need to buy additional tickets for the afterparty if you have your ticket for the concert. If we sell the tickets separately, we will clearly state it on our websites and socials.

  • We place great value on making the concerts available to everybody. For this reason, we provide reduced ticket prices for most of our concerts.

For instance, for our concerts at the Moods Jazzclub, holders of a Kultur Legi and children aged 12 to 16 receive a 50% discount; ZKB customers receive a 20% discount; holders of a Zurich Card receive a 10% discount, holders of a Carte blanche, students, and IV cards receive a CHF 5 reduction.

Please make sure to always show your ID/cards at the box office.

We also encourage you to participate in the ticket draws on our social media channels and on channels of our partners (e.g., babanews, Stadtkonzerte, Tsüri.ch, Bajour Basel, Unsere Beweggründe - UBWG, Radio X Basel, etc. Usually, the odds are quite high to save a spot for you and your friends.

  • Other than concert venues with regular programs, we are only given selected dates per year to curate our program in co-production with said venues.

We are in talks with artists both in the diaspora and in their home countries, this includes artists from regions affected by wars. Finding the right dates, times, spaces, and budgets, takes time and hard work because we also need to overcome structural challenges.
