Ko Shin Moon - space disco meets the electric bağlama
We are kicking off our second season with French psychedelic band Ko Shin Moon and have listened to their latest music and 2017 album «Ko Shin Moon».
To get to know Ko Shin Moon’s sound, we recommend you take your time and do not skip any of the songs on their 2017 album. Better yet, listen to the entire album at once, just as you would have done before the invention of music streaming. The band will take you on an experimental journey with incredible music samples and tunes from the silk road: string instruments, such as the bağlama or the oud are blended with synthesizers, vocals are looped on top of hypnotic rhythmic explorations, adding wit and joy to an ecstatic space disco ride. The band draws from a vast lineage of experimentalists and music explorers such as David Byrne, Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Clara Mondshine
Some of you will remember a cheesy wedding they have been to as children, others will notice strong influences of the Parisian band Acid Arab (rumor has it, Axel got his bağlama from Cem Yıldız). Listening to of «Pashto Karachi 2000» you will be taken to a 70’s movie soundtrack from the country of your choice, a feeling that continues with «Gabbar Singh». Here, Axel takes up the bağlama loops he has started with in the opening song «Zaffa».
In their Miniature series, Ko Shin Moon pays tribute to pop and folk cultures from Maghreb to India, i.e. the silk road. In the songs, you will listen to an eclectic dialogue between traditional instruments, vocal repertoires, and electronic tunes. In each of the songs, the band plays together with musicians from different ethnicities, such as Greek (Dari dari with Mélina Vlachos), Turkish (Isyan with Melike Şahin), or Kurdish (Shemirane with Ali Tekbaş).
