Sababa 5
No matter where you come from or what language you speak, there is an undeniable certainty you will somehow remember Sababa5's tunes from your childhood, your parent's record and tape collections, a kitsch wedding you attended as a kid, the taverns and meyhanes you know from older movies or your trips to the Mediterranean and you keep wondering why a band from Israel is playing these tunes.
The answer is Sababa5 and their modern interpretation of Mizrahi music, a genre initially performed by Syrian, Maroccan, or Iraqi Jews. Mizrahi refers to music with elements from Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa. Yes, that is, irregular rhythms, disco grooves, psychedelia, funk, and its synthesis with western pop from the 70ies, rediscovered and reinterpreted in the 21st century.
