Sababa 5

No matter where you come from or what language you speak, there is an undeniable certainty you will somehow remember Sababa5's tunes from your childhood, your parent's record and tape collections, a kitsch wedding you attended as a kid, the taverns and meyhanes you know from older movies or your trips to the Mediterranean and you keep wondering why a band from Israel is playing these tunes.

The answer is Sababa5 and their modern interpretation of Mizrahi music, a genre initially performed by Syrian, Maroccan, or Iraqi Jews. Mizrahi refers to music with elements from Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa. Sababa 5 is what the Psychedelic Music Explosion series stands for! Yes, that is, irregular rhythms, disco grooves, psychedelia, funk, and its synthesis with western pop from the 70ies, rediscovered and reinterpreted in the 21st century.

Yusuf Findus

Some call him the «semi-Turk, semi-Obwaldnder, semi-moustache*» (Amtsblatt, Amt fuer Ideen 2024), while others prefer Justus, Schünus, Juris, Yann, Julis, Schlusnus, also known as Yusuf Findus.

A man of many names, talents, and stories, Yunus Durrer has been living in Zurich for more than 10 years, deliberately dropped out of his English literature and linguistics program at the University of Zurich, yet strongly held on to his beloved books. If this reads like the prototype of the boomer generation's relaxed student life, it is everything but.

Yunus was born on the European side of Istanbul and grew up in Basel, New Jersey, Shanghai, the Asian side of Istanbul, and Engelberg. It is no coincidence that he loves mixing music, people, and cultures. Having played the tenor sax in his high school orchestra, Yunus went on to throw live living room concerts and blast bop tunes at rominimal afterparties.

For the past 7 years, he was responsible for the jazz program at the Festival da Jazz, paving the way for his current role as the jazz booker at Moods. Yusuf Findus will spin and share some of his pressed Bosphorus Beats at the Psychedelic Music Explosion.

*Yes, we too didn't understand the spurious math of the statement above.
