Islandman

Islandman was born from the musical dreams of İstanbul-based musician/producer Tolga Böyuk. Islandman represents a fictional character, a music persona, a dreamer composing the stories of a non-existing place…

The band performs as an electro-acoustic live trio. Their music forms a unique blend of smooth electronic structures and dance beats with spacey live guitars backed by shamanic rhythms. The band's power comes from the perfect balance between electronic structures and acoustic harmonies: Turkish psychedelia merges with African roots music and creates a feeling of the electric universe.

From recording music with the greats of the psychedelic genre in İstanbul, e.g., Cahit Berkay, visiting Aşıks in Anatolian cities, and talking to villagers in Tuva (current-day Russia), Islandman has come a long way: their journey took them to the best band award at the Montreux Jazz Festival, to a Kecak dance in Bali, to writing beautiful stories in the streets of Paris, recording ancient sounds with women in Bulgaria’s mountains, Aşık Veysel in Anatolia, Worldwide FM in London, hypnotizing tunes of the Tuareg in the Mali deserts, invitations to Elton John’s radio show, and much more. Doing so, the bandmembers too have become modern-day Aşıks: traveling the world and telling stories with their beautiful music.

In the meantime, they have been relentlessly producing new tunes, together with legendary jazz percussionist Okay Temiz and upcoming saz virtuoso Muhlis Berberoğlu. Islandman is back with their brand-new album and we are excited to have them back at the Jazz Club Moods.

Anıl

Co-founder of jazzhane, Anıl believes that his search for melancholy in music and the perception of home (or the lack thereof) is a search for belonging: a feeling that can be fictitious. Unsurprisingly, his eclectic sets heavily feature music in the minor key. Believing that stories are told through music, Anıl blends melodramatic tunes with the Andalusian cadence, Rumba, or Cumbia, accompanied by deep basslines. Depending on the night and setting, the stories can be dark, joyful, ecstatic, or humorous, oftentimes energetic and with explosive energy.
